What the summaries are

Play Store AI review summaries condense what users say about an app into a few themes. In Play Console, Google describes a Review summaries section showing the top positive and critical themes that surface regularly in reviews written in English. Google says the summaries are generated with machine-learning algorithms and filtered for relevance.

Which apps get them

Google states that an app needs enough similar reviews around more than one theme or topic for summaries to be available. Newer apps, or apps with few English reviews, may not have them.

Where users see them

Google says users may see representative summaries on your app's store listing in English. That makes them part of the first impression for people deciding whether to install. If a critical theme appears there, every prospective user reads it.

What they are good for

  • A quick read of how users describe your app in their own terms.
  • A check on whether the critical theme users see matches the problem your team is working on.
  • A prompt for product and support teams who never read reviews.

What they leave out

  • Reviews in other languages. In markets like India, many reviews are in Hindi, regional languages or a mix with English.
  • Counts. A theme in the summary might reflect a few dozen reviews or thousands.
  • Trend. Summaries do not show whether a problem started with the last release.
  • Specific issues. "Payment problems" covers many different failures with different fixes.
  • Evidence. There is no direct link to the reviews behind each theme.

Using them well

  1. Read the summary for your app each month and after each release.
  2. If a critical theme appears, check its size and trend in your own analysis of all reviews.
  3. Prioritise problems that appear in the public summary, because every visitor sees them.
  4. Reply to recent reviews about that theme with specifics about the fix.

Common questions

Can I edit or remove my app's summary?

The summaries are generated from users' reviews. The way to change them is to change what users experience and write about.

Are summaries shown in every language?

Google's help page describes summaries from English reviews and representative summaries on the listing in English.

Do summaries affect my rating?

No. Your rating is calculated from users' ratings; the summary describes what reviews say.

Does Google Maps have something similar?

Google Maps also shows review summaries and snippets for places; we cover those in a separate guide.

Summaries on Google Maps

If your brand also has stores, Google Maps shows its own summaries and review snippets for each place. The same advice applies: treat them as the public's view and analyse every review to decide what to fix.

If a critical theme appears on your listing

  1. Measure it: how many reviews mention it, and is it rising?
  2. Find the specific issue: "payments" might mean one wallet failing.
  3. Fix and ship, then reply to recent reviews about it to say which version fixes it.
  4. Encourage current users to review: a steady flow of reviews from today's version gives the summary current material to draw on.

Do not try to influence summaries by asking for positive reviews only. Play's policies, like Google's, are built around genuine user feedback.

Doing this with Falcon

Falcon classifies every Google Play review of your app into themes, sub-themes and specific issues with the sentiment of each mention, kept separate from your store reviews but on the same taxonomy. Negative share by topic and month shows which problems are new or growing, and every issue opens the reviews behind it, with the supporting words highlighted.
