Unsolicited and passive feedback

How Zero-Click Feedback Raises Your Response Rates

Every extra step in a survey loses respondents. Here's how zero-click feedback captures answers in a single tap and what to watch out for.

How Zero-Click Feedback Raises Your Response Rates

Most surveys ask customers to click a link and wait for a page to load before they can answer. Each step loses people. Zero-click feedback removes those steps. The customer taps a rating right where they already are, and the answer is recorded.

What Zero-Click Feedback Means

Zero-click feedback puts the question inside the message or screen the customer is already looking at. The rating scale sits in the email body or the app screen. One tap records the score. There's no separate survey page to open first.

Common formats

You've seen these before:

  • A row of numbers from 0 to 10 inside an NPS email
  • A thumbs up or down at the end of a support chat
  • A reply-with-a-number text message
  • A star rating that appears in-app after a task

Fewer steps, more answers

Most surveys

  • Click a link
  • Wait for a page to load
  • Each step loses people

Zero-click (the approach the article favours)

  • Question inside the message
  • One tap records the score
  • No survey page to open

Why Fewer Steps Mean More Answers

Customers are willing to help. Gartner's 2024 research found that 81% of consumers say they give feedback at least some of the time when asked. They drop out when the ask takes too much time or effort.

Length matters too. One benchmark study found that surveys with one to three questions had an average completion rate of 83%. Surveys with 15 or more questions averaged just 42%.

Every extra step loses people

A link that opens a new page is a step, and so is a slow mobile page. Zero-click formats cut those out, so more of the people who notice your question actually answer it.

That matters because direct feedback is shrinking. “We found that they're just sharing less feedback,” said Isabelle Zdatny of Qualtrics XM Institute. You can't afford to lose the customers who are still willing.

How to Design Zero-Click Feedback

Put the rating scale at the top of the message, before any other content. Make each option a large button that's easy to tap on a phone and records the score right away.

Keep the follow-up optional

After the tap, show a thank-you page with an optional comment box. Many people will add a sentence once they've already given a score. Never make the comment required, or you'll lose the score too. Our guide to micro-surveys covers how to write that follow-up question.

Watch Out for These Problems

Email security tools sometimes scan links automatically. If each rating is a plain link, a scanner can “click” one and record a fake response. Ask your vendor how they filter out bot clicks before you launch.

Accessibility matters as well. Use clear labels on every button so screen readers can describe them, and avoid relying on color alone.

Check answer quality too

A higher response rate is great, but check that the comments still explain the scores. Pair one-tap ratings with your support and ticket data in CSAT analysis. Frequently asked questions

What is zero-click feedback?

It's feedback a customer gives with a single tap inside an email or app, with no separate survey page to open.

Do embedded email surveys get higher response rates?

They usually do, because they remove the step of opening a survey page. Shorter surveys also complete far more often.

What is the best NPS survey format?

Put the 0 to 10 scale in the email body, record the score on tap, then offer an optional comment box.

Can bots create fake survey responses?

Yes. Email security scanners can trigger rating links. Choose a tool that filters out automated clicks.

Should the follow-up comment be required?

No. Keep it optional so you never lose the score from customers who don't want to write.

Does zero-click feedback work on mobile?

It works best on mobile when each rating is a large button that's easy to tap.
